CNC Machinist Lead
Under limited supervision, performs very complex set-ups on all lathes, mills, grinding equipment, drill presses, performing any operation within the capacity of the machine to produce parts and items to dimension and tolerance.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Interprets detail drawings, shop drawings, and sketches and determines appropriate set-up and sequence of operations to achieve required dimensions and tolerances. Plans and sets-up machining operations and controls to produce components using appropriate speeds, feeds, and depth of cut. Selects, mounts, and aligns cutting tools, tooling, machine attachments and materials to assure operation within prescribed limits. Selects proper coolant and adjusts flow.
Performs typical machining operations such as turning, facing, boring, grooving, trepanning, grinding and milling using lathes, mills, surface grinders, drill presses, and other equipment, and is able to achieve the tightest tolerances within the limitations of the equipment.
Ability to independently create own machining processes to include fixtures, feeds, speeds, tool selection, etc.
Reviews own work for completeness and quality workmanship standards. Provides pieces for inspection during production following established standards.
Guides other operators in the proper methods of machining and assists others in solving the more difficult problems involved in work operation, as requested by lead or supervisor.
Maintains regular and reliable attendance.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS
Uses a variety of precision measuring instruments such as dial indicators, vernier calipers, contour gauges, micrometers, etc., to check parts for conformance to required tolerances.
Sharpens drills and cutting tools using pedestal grinder, tool grinder, or surface grinder and attachments and applies proper tool rakes, clearances, and reliefs for the material and type of operation to be performed.
May make recommendations to improve design, material, reducibility, machining process, etc.
Performs all work within established operating standards and the capacity of the machine. Performs all other duties as assigned or directed.
Utilize Six Sigma and Lean Manufacturing tools, as applicable, to reduce process variation, eliminate non-value added activities and defects and improve customer satisfaction.
Maintains work area in safe and orderly manner.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Ability to: lift and carry up to 50 pounds frequently, write by hand and keyboard and use hand tools.
Ability to communicate by speech and hearing continuously. Communication is by phone and in person.
Visual acuity needed for close detailed work, computer use and work with tools and measuring devices.
General manufacturing environment where work area may be subject to undesirable temperatures in winter and summer. May require working with hazardous substances such as, but not limited to cutting oils.
High school diploma or equivalent and at least twelve semester units in advanced machine process at an accredited college.
Ability to read, write and follow verbal and written instructions. Capable of performing all shop math including algebra and simple trigonometric calculation. Must read and interpret complex blueprints and engineering sketches. Ability to effectively operate all shop equipment. Must have Authorization to work in the United States, and be able to have lawful access to controlled technology as required for this position.
